Banana Ball Python Morph – Name Confusion

Before we dive into these snakes, let’s clear up some confusion that people often have with the banana ball python morph and the coral glow morph.

Essentially, both of these snakes are the same and you will find that breeders use the names interchangeably.

However, the bloodlines of these snakes were started by different breeders. Unfortunately, a lot of the information surrounding this is quite murky, making it difficult for us to give you clear answers!

But the bottom line is these snakes have the same gene, but a different bloodline.

What do we mean by that? Well, two different hatchlings with the same gene were bred by different people. One breeder gave them the name of banana and the other coral glow.

Both the banana and coral glow have the same genes and there is no physical difference between the two snakes.

When it comes to the name, we will use banana throughout our article, as we think the name suits the bright yellow snake far better than coral glow does!

Discovery Of Banana Ball Python Morph

Just like other pythons, the banana ball originates from West Africa. These particular morphs are rare, but naturally occurring, meaning they weren’t created by a breeder by accident or to create a new bloodline to breed!

You can still find these rare morphs in the wild too, mainly in the jungles of Ghanan, the Ivory Coast, and Senegal. In terms of breeding, the codominant gene in these snakes was first bred back in 2003.

Will Slough bred the first captive-bred clutch, and sold them for $25,000! When we compare that price to other morphs, these are some of the most expensive.

We will look at the cost in more detail later on, but it’s worth mentioning that in recent years the cost of this newer morph has decreased, making them more affordable for snake owners and breeders.

Genetics Of Banana Ball Python Morph

Now that we have established where this python morph was discovered, let’s move on and take a closer look at its genetics.

These pythons have co-dominant genes that allow the banana ball python morph to breed with other morphs with ease, creating wonderful snakes.

So what kind of snakes can you breed the banana ball python morph with? Well, it’s been used with spider and pied ball python morphs to create different colored and patterned snakes.

You can expect some beautiful snakes when you breed a banana ball with either of these!

Some of the more popular mutations included the banana pied, black pastel banana, and banana cinnamon. Just the sound of their names suggests that these are beautiful-looking snakes!

The banana ball python is often bred with dark morphs too, that create wonderful patterns and intense orange color, rather than a bright yellow that we usually associate with this snake.

You can even create deep purple snakes which are sure to turn some heads! The banana ball’s genetic qualities are super handy for a breeder and allow you to play about and create wonderful snakes.

Health And Longevity Of Banana Ball Pythons

So how long will your banana ball python live? Well, in captivity, you can expect these snakes to live for up to 40 years if they are cared for correctly!

That is an incredibly long lifespan, with the longest lifespan reported at forty-seven and a half years. For a snake like a ball python, that is incredible!

And you don’t need to worry too much about any health concerns either. Banana ball pythons don’t have any serious genetic or hereditary illnesses. If your snake does get sick, the most likely cause is improper care.

You can avoid this by keeping the temperature and humidity levels of your snake’s cage level. Be sure to speak to a local breeder or staff at your nearest exotic pet store for advice on how to do this and the correct temperature.

You will also want to keep the cage clean to help prevent respiratory infections. These are pretty common when the cage isn’t clean or the humidity isn’t right for the snake.

Price Of A Banana Ball Python Morph

As we mentioned earlier, these snakes used to be extremely expensive. Since breeders have created a steady supply of these morphs, the price has dropped dramatically.

You can now pick up a banana ball python for roughly $150 for a baby. You can expect to spend more of course, with specialized adults costing closer to $3,000

Like with other snakes, it is cheaper to purchase a hatchling, but caring for these is trickier. For first-time snake owners, it is easier to purchase an adult snake that requires less attentive care.

For those that want a unique pattern or color, you will likely end up spending more than the average cost outlined above. Either way,  be sure that the snake you purchase is within your budget.

Where Can I Buy A Banana Ball Python Morph?

You can pick up a banana ball python morph pretty easily. Your local exotic pet shop or breeder should have a few available for you. Your best option is to purchase your snake from a ball breeder.

Purchasing a snake this way allows you to physically examine the snake, looking for clear eyes, a rounded body, and general health.

When purchasing from a ball breeder, be sure to ask about the care the snake needs, especially if this is your first time owning a snake.

You can also purchase a banana ball python online. It’s worth checking out CB Reptile. As their site only works with captive-bred ball pythons.
