Shopping for a French Bulldog, or for someone who loves one? The first half of this list is for the dog: somewhere warm to sleep, food puzzles and a few ways to play. The second half is Frenchie-themed gifts for their people. Holiday stock sells out and changes fast, so check the size and availability on each listing before you order.

Before you wrap anything: holiday safety for dogs

The holidays fill the house with extra food, guests and decorations, and some of it is risky for dogs. Most of what follows comes from the ASPCA’s holiday safety tips.

Keep your dog’s diet the same as any other day. Fatty, sweet and spicy foods can all be dangerous to pets, and so can turkey and chicken bones. Chocolate is a particular problem: it contains methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, an abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures (ASPCA list of foods to avoid).

Check anything sugar-free for xylitol. Breath mints, baked goods, some peanut and nut butters and sugar-free desserts, including “skinny” ice cream, can all contain it (FDA). In dogs, xylitol can cause a rapid, life-threatening drop in blood sugar. If you think your dog has eaten some, take them to your vet or an emergency animal hospital right away.

Then look at your decorations from a dog’s height. Broken ornaments can damage a dog’s mouth and digestive tract, and swallowed tinsel can block it. Chewed wires can give an electric shock, and one wag of the tail can knock over a candle. Mistletoe and holly can cause stomach upset and heart problems if eaten, while poinsettias can cause mild to moderate stomach irritation.

Christmas gifts for your French Bulldog

A heated bed for cold nights

The K&H Thermo-Snuggly Sleeper runs on 6 watts. With your dog lying on it, the surface warms to about 102°F, close to a dog’s body temperature, and when it’s empty it stays about 15°F above room temperature. The heater and cover both come out, and K&H says to wash the cover on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry.

The medium is rated for pets up to 30 pounds. Adult French Bulldogs average 11 to 12.5 kg, about 24 to 28 pounds (PDSA), so the medium suits most of them.

Put the bed somewhere your dog can step off once they’ve warmed up. K&H advises against using it in a confined space a pet can’t leave or plugging it into an extension cord, and the bed has no on/off switch. AKC’s heated-bed guidance adds supervised use, a cord kept out of reach and a regular bed for overnight sleep. Check with your vet before using one for a young puppy or a dog recovering from illness.

A lick mat for slow snacking

A lick mat spreads a small snack across a textured surface, so it takes your dog a while to lick it clean. It’s a good gift for a Frenchie who inhales treats in seconds.

LickiMat suggests your dog’s usual wet food, pumpkin or broth, and freezing a loaded mat so it lasts longer. Peanut butter works too, as long as it’s xylitol-free. Leave out ice cream: dairy can upset a dog’s stomach, and sugar-free versions may contain xylitol. Most dogs care about the food, not the rubber, but keep an eye on one who likes to chew.

A non-slip food bowl

If your dog’s bowl slides across the kitchen floor at every meal, this one has a non-slip design and is sold for French Bulldogs and cats. It also makes a simple replacement for a worn or chipped bowl. Watch the first few meals to make sure the shape works with your dog’s short muzzle.

A KONG to stuff with food

The KONG Classic is a hollow rubber toy you fill with food. KONG’s sizing guide lists the medium for dogs up to 35 pounds and says the largest ring should be bigger than the back of your dog’s mouth. If your dog is between sizes, go up one. Our guide to French Bulldog toys has more ideas.

A bubble machine with bacon-scented bubbles

This might be the craziest dog Christmas present I’ve ever seen. Bubbletastic’s bubble machine runs on four AA batteries (not included) and comes with an 8-ounce bottle of bacon-scented solution, which the company describes as non-toxic and tear-free. Plenty of dogs love chasing bubbles. Keep the sessions short, though, for the reason in the next pick.

An automatic ball launcher

French Bulldogs aren’t the most active breed, but many love fetch. When I start throwing a ball for Charlie, my Frenchie, he wants to keep playing until he’s all out of breath. With a flat-faced breed, it’s up to you to end the game before that point. French Bulldogs can overheat and struggle to breathe very quickly, especially when it’s warm, so short, calm sessions are the way to go.

The iFetch Too launches standard 2.5-inch tennis balls and is meant for medium to large dogs. The original iFetch uses 1.5-inch mini balls and is aimed at small to medium breeds (iFetch FAQ). Supervise until your dog understands the game, because at its highest settings the launcher can hit a dog standing right in front of it hard enough to hurt.

A treat-dispensing ball

Fill it with treats or part of your dog’s daily kibble, and the food drops out as your dog nudges and rolls it along. You can adjust the inside to make it easier or harder. Using kibble instead of treats means it doesn’t add anything extra to the day. I bought one for Charlie, and he plays with it for hours.

A soft, waterproof blanket

Give a Frenchie a soft blanket and it’s theirs. This reversible plush one has a waterproof layer, so it also protects a couch or bed from muddy paws and accidents. It measures 38 by 29 inches.
